You are merely a fancy way for me to cover my excuses, or better yet my fears. I have always justified you by fluffing you up with logic, calculations, and practicality but those are separate entities and you do not belong with them. My life out here has cut you down to minimal usage, but I realized that you are still present in my naturally structured brain.

I was asked this weekend to explain my reasoning for carrying you around and I could give no explanation. Subsequently, I was given a receipt with 1 Red Berry & Hibiscus, 1 Scone, and 1 Jam and Butter printed on its front and a simple statement to live by on the back labeled ‘Riley’s Year of Yes!’ It said, “*Just a reminder* say yes to everything that comes your way! NO pretense or judgement.”

I’m thankful for the friends that let me mumble through all my pretenses, love me for all that I am, and still push me to spice things up now and then.

My host mom for my time in Paris emailed me this week to introduce herself and hid a sentence of French in the middle of her paragraph saying, “Nous allons essayer de parler Français le plus possible ensemble.” Of course, having never taken a lick of French before I couldn’t begin to guess what she was saying.

I looked it up today and she said, “We will try to speak French as much as possible together.”

My answer is yes, yes times ten.
